This month I am determined to delve back into my novel in progress. I realized why I was resisting writing -- I am going to have to go to a deep, dark place in our history and I simply don't want to go there. Now that I have that awareness, I think I can move through the resistance.
Nonetheless, I am still very insecure about writing fiction, having been a nonfiction writer my entire adult life. I just don't believe I have a good enough imagination, good enough use of craft techniques like using metaphors and incorporating the five senses in descriptions, etc.
So, am I still insecure? Yup. Will I always be? Probably. Does it matter? Only if it keeps me from writing.
Trying to remember Nike's wonderful slogan: Just do it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit. Hope you enjoy your stay. I blog here on Monday and Tuesday. This blog was created at the time my memoir came out, in February, 2009. Its motto was: creating a life of inner peace and self-acceptance from the depths of despair.

Doesn't matter the genre - you wrote one great book, you can write another!
I'm with Alex on this one!
It is all about crafting the right words in the right way to make the reader see it. It's the same whether fiction or non- fiction. Fiction you have more words to describe at your disposal. Have fun with it.
Once you get started, I bet you'll feel great about it.
You can do it!
Alex, I love you.
Suze, you, too
Sydney, that's great advice - have fun. Must remember that!
Tonja, I'm sure I will.
Diane, really?

I think the important thing is figuring out what it is you want to say. Once you know that, the creative part will take over and help you say it in an artful way. You can do it! :)
I'm sure you have bundles of imagination - let yourself dream and you'll find it. Good luck with the deep, dark history!
well it sounds intense! bet you'll have lots interested to read it! like me!
Good luck getting back into writing your novel! You can do it. :)
Yep, "just do it" is a great message for everything in life.
Craft, metaphors, description--all that good stuff comes later once the story has poured out of your heart and onto your hard drive.
You have a story. Just write it!
I believe in you. Go for it.
If you weren't insecure...you wouldn't be a writer! :)
It is all about the journey, isn't it? Just 'doing it' is progress and success!
If you weren't a bit insecure, it would probably mean you were over-confident and full of yourself. Those are the most annoying authors to read. When the writing has depth of feeling and touches that insecurity within us all, then the writer connects better with the reader.
You can do it and you will do it just fine.

A Faraway View
You're right; those things only matter if you LET them matter, and let them keep you from writing. You bared your soul in your first book. That had to have been extremely hard, but you DID it, and did it well, so I have faith that you can write another book, no matter what.
You can totally do it!
It's good to get out of the comfort zone from time to time and I'll bet it sparks your creativity more than you think it will!
Have fun. :)
C'mon, if Churchill can do it, so can you! Well ... I know he wrote a novel, I just don't know if he got it published. I'll have to check on that! :)
There's another slogan I'm reminded of, "If you think you can, or you think can't....you're right."
We're all insecure about certain things...since you've discovered what your blockage is..you can go to that dark place and finish your novel. It definatley won't be easy, but after it's done the accomplishment you will feel will be brilliant!
I've never even tried to write a novel, so I admire your talent!
Just do it is one of my favourite philosophies :)
Thanks for the information... I really love your blog posts... specially those on Helping Organisations
It sounds like we are in a similar place. I wrote non-fiction for years, now at age 64 am dabbling in fiction. Maybe we should be CP's/readers for each other! ;-)
Although I can't claim a finished fiction work, I know it's the same: find the story thread and lay it all out, then polish the pieces. I echo all the above.
I hear the underlying message that the dark is scary. Inch your way along with the flashlight of imagination and follow your inner urgings.
